Mistletoe (the natural kind) is a parasite in trees - it looks a bit like a ball of green vegetation that contrasts with the bare branches of its host tree. Traditionally (in Celtic mythology or what was called the Old Religion) the spirits of the ancestors left the ground and were drawn up into certain trees. As the mistletoe stays green in Winter, it was taken to be a symbol of the ancestors and so kissing under the mistletoe could be interpreted as seeking their approval.
