I don't think it has been available for years. My mom used to make this in the 70's. Everything came in the box except you added the ground beef.
I make my own version, based on the wonderful Schilling Taco Casserole Box dinner:
1 package regular Schilling Taco Seasoning
1 lb. ground beef
1-2 T. minced, dried onions (depending on your taste)
1 8 oz can tomato sauce
1 c. water
2-3 very thick, soft corn tortillas
1) Brown ground beef in (oven safe) skillet on top of stove. Add minced onions, taco seasoning packet, 1 c. water, cook on low until water is gone.
2) While cooking ground beef, bake corn tortillas in 275 degree oven until very hard then break into small bits (about 1" by 1") and set aside. Increase oven to 375 degrees.
3) Stir tomato sauce into cooked ground beef mixture.
4) Stir broken tortilla bits into beef mixture just until coated with mixture.
5) Cover with foil and place mixture (in oven proof skillet) in oven for 15-20 minutes.
Sprinkle with shredded cheese and serve with sour cream. Some optional add-in ideas: red onion; sliced black olives.
This is as close as I have gotten to the delicious box dinner I remember from McCormick and Schilling.
Schilling's Taco Mix (not casserole specific) is sold in most markets. As a Taco Casserole is not much more than another way of presenting tacos, I would think that the spice mix would be the same. I can pretty much assure you that if you make the casserole with the regular mix, it won't be terrible. It's worth a try!
Haven't seen it in years!
Soggy tacos are a result of absorbing liquid or moisture. To prevent this, you can put the taco shells on the top of the casserole. Another idea would be to add them on top once the casserole has been removed from the oven.
