Form 990 is Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax. Form 990 has 11 pages and must be filed by tax-exempt organizations, nonexempt charitable trusts, and tax-exempt (section 537) political organizations to provide information required by IRS Code Section 6033. Such charities are required to make Form 990 available for public inspection at their offices as well as to mail a copy, upon written request, within 30 days and they're allowed to charge for postage and reasonable copying charges.

Form 990 is a public information document. So it also is available directly from the IRS as well as from many state government charity regulators. You can obtain a copy of a charity's Form 990 from the IRS by writing to Ogden Service Center, P.O. Box 9941, Mail Stop 6734, Ogden UT 84409. Or you can fax a request to 1-801-775-8803. Or you can call their toll-free number specifically designated for questions about exempt organizations, 1-877-829-5500. Be sure to include the full name of the nonprofit organization and the city and state where it's located. The IRS will charge you for copies of the document.

How do you file Form 990-N?

Form 990-N is also known as the e-Postcard. Small tax-exempt organizations with annual gross receipts of $25,000 or less may be required to submit Form 990-N electronically, unless they decide to file a complete Form 990 (Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax) or Form 990-EZ (Short Form Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax). The e-Postcard is due every year by the 15th day of the fifth month after your tax year closes.IRS article "Annual Electronic Filing Requirement for Small Exempt Organizations---Form 990-N (e-Postcard)" has a linkin the "How to File" box that gives direct access to filing Form 990-N. But the box warns that if you have trouble accessing the system using this link, then there is an alternative access. Alternatively, go to http://epostcard.form990.org, where there are three steps for your first visit. Step 1 is to register as a New User. Step 2 is to create your Form 990-N. Step 3 is to submit your e-Postcard.
