How do you clean brass buttons?

Use Autosol or rubbing compound and buff it Assuming it is an old button, you do not want to remove the patina. Do not use Brasso or naval jelly. When I buy an old brass British cap badge, I clean it with a tooth brush and tooth paste. That removes any dirt and cleans it just enough to look a little brighter.

How do you you clean a brass trumpet?

There are various brass cleaning agents available to polish brass such as (in UK) Brasso, and Duraglit. These should be applied, left to dry then polished off using a lint free cloth or duster. A word of warning. If your brass instrument is gold or silver plated or is lacquered do not use these products! It will remove the plating or lacquer. Silver has special non abrasive cleaning agents available such as 'silverglit' and Gold plating like lacquered instruments only need a rub off with a lint free cloth or duster. Every so often to prevent the build up of gunk in the tubing of the trumpet, you should immerse the instrument in warm soapy water and dislodge any bacterial growths (brass verdigrease) with a spiral brush inserted into the tubes. Kits for these are available at any music shop.
