If you don't have any balance in your account and still you want the bank to pass the check you want a "Payment Guaranteed Check".

A Payment guaranteed check is a check that bank will honor and pay without referring to its account balance. Special comment (i.e. "Payment Guaranteed") will be printed on the face of the check. Correct signature, amounts in words & numbers, date is the only thing the bank will prefer.

Only a few, highly stable, valuable customers will have such a check and that is also as an offer proposed by the bank itself to the account holder. Please refer your bank's web site/branch for eligibility conditions.

Only a few banks with high stability are allowed to issue such checks and most of the time the check is a crossed one. However it is common that the bank will impose some limitations on how much checks customer can use, maximum value of a cheque etc...

What is the reason to never write a check with cash in the pay to order of line?

It is not a good idea to write a check with "Cash" as the payee because if you or the payee lose the check, anyone could pick it up and cash it, and the bank would not be responsible for the lost funds, since making a check payable to "Cash" essentially allows anyone holding the check to cash it.

Why are checks more advantageous than money orders?

The only advantage a check has over a money order us that anyone with a bank account can write out a check - the process of creating a check is simpler (and free). Money orders must be purchased through a guarantor such as a bank who will secure the funds for the money order on consignment. This makes a money order "verified funds" because a guarantor has already collected the money. A check, on the otherhand, is a promise to pay but there is no guarantee the funds will be available when the payee goes to collect them.

What does writing FOR DEPOSIT ONLY on a check do?

When you deposit a bank check or money order etc. and you write the words FOR DEPOSIT ONLY below your name and account number on the back of the check you are telling the receiving bank that you want the entire amount of the check to be deposit into your Checking and/or into your Savings account and that you are not to receive any of the funds from that check until it fully clears and the funds are fully available in your respective account. Also by writing FOR DEPOSIT ONLY on the back of your check you are protecting yourself in the event the check gets lost or stolen because anyone who finds the check will not be able to cash it or deposit it into an account other then your own.
