In Ancient times, the main unit was called a sheqel (שקל). One gold sheqel was worth twenty-five silver sheqels; and one sheqel of Tyre was worth eight sheqels of Israel. Twenty-five sheqels was called one maneh. Since 1980, the modern state of Israel uses a different coin which has the same name of "sheqel." Other coins of the Hebrews were called perutah, ma'ah, gerah, selah, pundion, dinar, and zuz.
