According to the Arbor Day Foundation, the first Arbor Day in the US was held in Nebraska on April 10, 1872. This event happened after, J. Sterling Morton proposed a tree planting holiday at a meeting of the State Board of Agriculture. Arbor Day was officially named a state holiday in Nebraska in 1885, and was a celebrated day in most states by 1920.
