They didn't. They migrated from the US southwest, from a mythical place known as Aztlan, and migrated southward into present-day Mexico City.

It is believed a civil war or another such conflict resulted in several factions from the original Aztecs to split and become the Mexica. Hence the name of their city: Mexico-Tenochtitlan.
