Chester Greenwood was an avid ice skater who lived in Maine. He found it difficult to keep his ears warm while skating and needed something to shield his ears from the bitter cold. He created two circular hoops from wire and covered them in beaver fur and velvet. They were connected by a steel band, which served as a headband.
