∙ 6y agoRecent historical research has shown he was born in Spain. He spoke and wrote Spanish and was married to a Spanish noble woman. The idea he was Italian actually was a made up because the Italian Americans wanted a holiday and parades like the Irish Americans so they made him Italian rather than Spanish.
