Originally from the Danish name 'København', which means the 'Merchant's port' (Køber = merchant; havn = port). It may have passed via German to English, since it's 'Kopenhagen' in German. (Like other harbour cities around the rim of the Baltic sea there were traditionally a significant German minority in Copenhagen).
in the middelages it was called Køpmannæhafn in old danish. it means "merchands harbor". This explains what a great city it was for merchands to do business. In danish we call it København - which if you slice the word up in danish sounds like "Buy a harbor", but that's just nonsense... Most people don't understand our danish letter "ø"which sounds a little like "eueh". But all in all theres no meaning behind Copenhagen, exept that its similar to Kopenhagen as the German naighbors say.
The first time the name of the city is mentioned (In 1043) it is purely mentioned as "Havn" (port/harbor)
Later in the middle ages, it would be known as "Købmændendes Havn" (merchants port/harbor)
Thus, many countries named it differently afterwards.
The reason why it got it's name is quiet obvious.
The city grew to be big, because of the large amounts of merchants and the size and usage of the harbor, and the docks.
