On 15th September, 1950, MacArthur landed American and South Korean marines at Inchon, 200 miles behind the North Korean lines. The following day he launched a counterattack on the North Koreans. When they retreated, MacArthur's forces carried the war northwards, reaching the Yalu River, the frontier between Korea and China on 24th October, 1950.

Why were the American Sailors in Australia in World War 2?

The U.S. forces in the Asia Pacific theater regrouped in Australia after its defeat in Bataan and Corregidor in the Philippine islands, which resulted in the loss of 130,000 troops. In February 1942 Gen. Douglas MacArthur was ordered by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to escape the embattled Philippines, an American territory at that time, to Australia to reorganize and prepare American forces for the reconquest of the Philippines and the invasion of Japan. Once in Australia he was appointed by the Allied nations as the Supreme Commander of the Southwest Pacific Area, which included all Allied land forces from the U.S., U.K., Australia and New Zeland. While, Admiral Chester Nimitz became Commander in Chief of the US Pacific Fleet. Gen. Douglas MacArthur made Australia his temporary headquarters and the launching pad for the eventual counter strike against Japan. It was agreed by the joint commanders, Gen. MacArthur and Admiral Nimitz, that their first objective should be to establish and protect a line of communications across the South Pacific to Australia. This objective also meant that the U.S. and its allies will defend Australia from any Japanese invasion. This resulted in the presence of American sailors, soldiers and airmen in Australia during the early part of World War II in the Pacific.

Why did Douglas MacArthur get fired during Korean War?

MacArthur believed that expanding the war and moving forces to the Yalu, along with use of additional friendly forces would force China to stop fighting in support of North Korea and result in final victory for UN forces. MacArthur was aware that Chinese forces were already supporting North Korean forces, but was unaware of the massing of forces taking place in China and being encouraged by China in Russia that may have preempted his proposed strategy. Truman was afraid this strategy would bring Russia into the war and potentially could lead to atomic war, and therefore wanted to use a "containment strategy" that would limit the scope and avoid expansion of additional international involvement. MacArthur was outspoken and aggressive in his pursuit of following through on his plans and disobeyed the lawful order of the President to obtain clearance. Despite the obvious liabilities associated with dismissing an extremely beloved commander, Truman's hand was forced and MacArthur was dismissed.
