Gerald R. Ford was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on July 14, 1913. Two years after his birth the family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Ford later lived in New Haven, Connecticut while attending Yale Law School, from which he received a degree in 1941.
Ford entered the Navy in April 1942, and became an ensign. He taught physical training at a base in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, for a year. Then, he became a physical training director and assistant navigation officer of the aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Monterrey. The Monterrey took part in every big naval battle in 1943 and 1944. Ford was discharged in January of 1946.
After that, Ford lived in Michigan, and then in Washington, DC.

Ford, who attended Yale Law School after his undergraduate studies, balanced his academic pursuits with his responsibilities as a student-athlete on the football team.
