Yes, he was in the Navy in WW 2 and was a hero. He was on a PT boat in the Pacific when it was rammed by a Japanese ship. He saved the lives of his men and carried one injured man on his back to a nearby island. There is a book out called Profiles in Courage that tells his stories.
