Jerusalem. When Luke (the author of Acts) describes the onset of Saul's persecution of the church and the flight of many believers from Jerusalem, he points out that the apostles remained in the city (Acts 8:1). Later, in few words, he recounts the death of James:

Acts 12:1, 2 - Now about that time Herod the king stretched out his hand to harass some from the church. Then he killed James the brother of John with the sword. [NKJV]

Acts 12:1, 2 - Now about that time Herod the king stretched out his hand to harass some from the church. Then he killed James the brother of John with the sword.[NKJV]

This Herod was Agrippa I, the grandson of Herod the Great. "Killed...with the sword" refers to beheading. This is the only death of an apostle recorded in The Bible.

James, who is said to have become a converted "believer" in Jesus as the prophesied Messiah [Christ], as well as most of the other Apostles of Christ DISAPPEARED from the biblical account and historical world view following Christ's ascension into heaven... all headed out to whatever places God sent them in each of their commissions:

"GO YE THEREFORE, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit..." (Matt.28:19).

"This letter is from Paul, an apostle. I was not appointed by any group or by human authority. My call is from Jesus Christ Himself and from God the Father, who raised Jesus from the dead... He revealed His Son to me... when all this happened to me, I did not rush out to consult with anyone else; not did I go up to Jerusalem to consult with those who were apostles before I was. No, I went away to Arabia and later returned to the city of Damascus. It was not until three years later that I finally went to Jerusalem for a visit with Peter and stayed with him for fifteen days. And the only other apostle I met at that time was JAMES, the LORD's BROTHER." (Gal.1:1-19 NLT New Living Translation)

The fates of all of God's apostles... where exactly they went and what befell them... aren't recorded in the Bible. Only tradition and stories are scattered about for people to read and or hear: stories and legends that may or may not be true. But the true accounts of each of them may well be recorded sometime in the future, in the book of "the Acts of the apostles," since Acts is one of the New Testament books left "incomplete"... "open-ended" without the ending: "AMEN" like most of the other completed New Testament books are.
