Saint John's Gospel informs us of a pool near the sheep market, just outside the city of Jerusalem, where people came for magical cures for all sorts of ailments, and where Jesus is said to have cured a lame man. Archaeologists have confirmed the existence of this pool and have established that it was part of a temple to the Greek god, Asclepius, where those in need of a cure would go to be treated by the priests and to seek divine healing in the pool. The purpose of the temple is confirmed by the finding at the site of a votive offering by a grateful worshipper.

According to John's gospel, a certain man, a practising Jew, had been attending the pool for thirty eight years, seeking a cure. Each time Asclepius (in the gospel account, an 'angel') passed by and disturbed the waters someone else was able to enter the water first and thus be cured. Jesus healed the man and told him to take up his bed and walk.
