The account is in Matthew 8:1-4/Mark 1:40-45. The leper worshipped Him, knelt down and said, "If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean." The healing process is in 5 steps. (1) In Mark, we read "He was moved with compassion," proof of the pure spiritual love that underpinned all Jesus' healing work. (2) Against all good medical practice, against strict Jewish law, and against the social norms of the day, Jesus touched him! The leper felt the touch, not just of Jesus the man, but of the Holy Spirit which was to heal him. Imagine the shock and disbelief of the onlookers! (3) Next, Jesus spoke. "I will!" Jesus' will was always God's will. In John 5:19 He explained "The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do." So Jesus was seeing the leper as God saw him - as made in His image and likeness - and seeing the Father doing the work. (4) "Be thou clean!" Spoken with real authority, spoken on behalf of the Father. "Immediately his leprosy was cleansed." (5) But still the healing is not yet complete. The material evidence has gone, but according to Leviticus, only the High Priest can declare the leprosy cured. And that takes eight days. Jesus knew that the man could not be accepted back into society without undergoing this process. So the healing would not be complete without it. Perhaps Jesus is telling us, when we witness a spiritual healing by God's power of HIV/AIDS or similar "incurable" socially unacceptable conditions, make sure the medical authorities verify the healing. This will put their minds at rest, and be "for a testimony to them." (Mark v44). Yes, let the authorities know that the Christ is still present and active and healing today, and that we Christians are taking literally "Cleanse the lepers" (Matthew 10:8). See also Luke 17:11-19 for the cleansing of ten lepers.

What is the story of Jesus and the 10 lepers?

One day, as Jesus was starting His journey to Jerusalem, He came to a village. He met ten men who had a terrible sickness called leprosy. In those times, people who had leprosy had to stay outside the village so others would not catch their sickness. No doctor could heal them. These men knew that Jesus could perform miracles. They begged Jesus to heal them, crying, "Have mercy on us!" Jesus did not touch them. He simply told them, "Go, show yourselves to the priests." The priests would tell them if they would be allowed to go home again. As the men left, full of joy, to see the priest, they were healed! They believed that Jesus could heal them. The Son of God showed His amazing love and power to these men by taking away their sickness! One of the ten men turned and came back to Jesus. He came to thank and praise Jesus for the miracle of his cure. The man fell down before Jesus to show his thanks. Jesus asked, "Were not ten men healed? Where are the nine?" The other nine only thought of their newly healed bodies. The one who came back knew that Jesus had come to heal the world of it's greatest sickness - sin. Jesus saw the man's faith in Him. Jesus said to him, "Your faith has made you well." Luke 17:11-19
