Deere and Company's farm tractor history began indirectly in Waterloo, Iowa in 1892 when pioneering engineer John Froelich built his first "tractor," a term not then in use(this is a shortened form of "traction engine"). JOHN DEERe's agriculture history began much longer ago in 1837 when John Deere himself, working as a blacksmith, polished a steel plow for a farmer. This inovative idea caught on and made Deere famous for his plows which he soon after began to build. For the complete John Deere story try the company's website: http://www.deere.com/en_US/compinfo/history/companyhistory.html or for reading material John Deere's Company By: Wayne G. Broehl Jr.
