Mary and Joseph went to Bethlehem to register with the Roman Government. Unbeknown to anyone God planned that Mary and Joseph go to Bethlehem so that a prophecy about the Messiah could be fulfilled, and that prophecy was that the coming Messiah would come out of Bethlehem. Jesus the Christ fulfilled that prophecy when He was born to Mary in Bethlehem.

Matthew's Gospel indicates that Mary and Joseph were from Bethlehem in Judea. While returning from Egypt, they were warned in a dream to turn aside and go to Nazareth in Galilee, instead. Luke's Gospel says that Mary and Joseph were from Nazareth in Galilee. They travelled to Bethlehem for a census, then returned to Nazareth.

We do not know what was in Joseph or Mary's mind that led them to Bethlehem before Jesus was born. perhaps there was a compelling reason for them to go there at that particular time. We do know that God played a very large part in why they went to Bethlehem because it had been prophesied before hand that the Messiah would come out of Bethlehem and that prophecy had to be fulfilled (See Micah 5:2). All we know is that in the mind of Joseph and Mary was that they had to go to Bethlehem at that particular time. We have seen in Scripture more than once that God has directed persons to do certain things and unbeknown to them they were fulfilling a purpose for God.

Joseph and Mary were betrothed to each other. Joseph had to go to Bethlehem to be registered because he was an ancestor of King David. Mary, who was with child went with him. Joseph was the step father of Jesus and God had ordained that Joseph and Mary raise Jesus after His birth. They became a family and Joseph was the father figure.
