Egypt for awhile then to Nazareth.
There is only one Nativity story in the New Testament, told by two writers with different 'themes or goal' for their intended audiences. Matthew was writing mainly to the Jewish audience and desired to tie 'God's National Servant' Israel to 'God's Personal Servant' Jesus. He equates the story of Israel coming out of Egypt in Hosea 11:1 with Jesus coming out of Egypt in Matthew 2 -- a thematic connection, if you will - going from Egypt to Nazareth.
On the other hand, Luke was writing to a larger gentile audience in Greek and did not include this probable short trip in his writings most likely because he didn't think his audience would understand it like the Jews would. In the Greek he uses the term 'oun' meaning then or now indicating a continuing subject/event to another and not an 'immediate' event which the Greek would be 'euthus.' Therefore, there is no contradiction of the two accounts.
There are two nativity stories in The Bible, so there are two answers.
Christmas traditions combine elements of the two stories and ignore the contradictions.

No record of this in the Bible, but we can presume that Mary and Joseph held high respect for the wise men as they allowed them to worship baby Jesus and give their gifts to him.
At Christmas, we set up a Nativity scene, with Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus.
