Two major biblical characters were named Joseph. The Patriarch Jacob had a favorite son named Joseph who was born to him near Haran in northern Mesopotamia (modern Iraq). However, Jacob, Joseph and the rest of the family soon moved back to Canaan (modern Israel/Palestine). While he was still young, Joseph was sold into slavery and taken to Egypt, where he eventually became the Pharaoh's Prime Minister.
The other major Joseph of The Bible is Joseph the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. Joseph was from Bethlehem in Judea.
Other biblical Josephs include Joseph of Arimathea, who was a Pharisee and secret believer in Jesus. He is known for asking that Jesus might be buried in his personal tomb after the Jesus had died on the cross. He was from Arimathea.
