Helena, mother of the fourth-century Christian emperor, Constantine, located, to her own satisfaction all the places where every important event in the recorded career of Jesus at Jerusalem supposedly took place. She arranged for each of these places to be dug up, and promptly identified what was found there to her own satisfaction. She claimed to have personally found the tomb, the place of the crucifixion, the True Cross and the locations where Jesus was born and ascended to heaven. Somewhat conveniently, if improbably, the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea and the hill on which the Romans crucified the worst of criminals were so adjacent that she was able to order a magnificent church to be built across both sites. In Jerusalem, the Church of the Anastasis or the Holy Sepulchre is now at the very place where Jesus met his death and was buried - on Mount Golgotha.
Another answer from our community:
The tomb was Joseph's to begin with; he had prepared it in advance for himself.
Matthew 27:59, 60 - When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed. [NKJV]
The gospels tell us that Joseph of Arimathea owned the tomb, a burial cave, for his own use when he died, so he would probably have had it excavated. The surprising thing is that Helena, mother of Constantine, decided that the tomb was in quite close proximity to the place where Jesus was crucified. It seems improbable beyond belief that a wealthy or influential man would own a tomb so close to where the Romans were in the habit of executing criminals.
St. Joseph of Arimethea offered his tomb for the Body Of Jesus.
Joseph of Arimathea was the owner of the new tomb into which Jesus was placed.
NO. As soon as Jesus was taken down from the Cross, He was taken to a tomb that Joseph Arimathea already owned. Christ was buried in that tomb.
There is no clear historical evidence to suggest that Joseph of Arimathea was a direct relative of Jesus. He is described in the Bible as a wealthy disciple who provided his own tomb for Jesus' burial. Some traditions suggest he may have been a distant relative, but this is not definitively proven.
Joseph of Arimathaea: Matthew 27:57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple: Matthew 27:58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. Matthew 27:59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, Matthew 27:60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.
Because St. Joseph of Arimathea was the one who took the initiative to ask Pilate for the Body Of Christ & then to bury Him in his own Sepulchre.
The New Testament tells us that Jesus was buried in a new tomb owned by Joseph of Arimathea.
Matthew 27:57 - 60
Matthew 27:57-60 reads, "When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away."
John 19:38-40 - After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus. And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. [NKJV]
After Jesus died on the cross, a man named Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for Jesus' body and it was given to him. Joseph then had the body buried in his tomb. But three days later he rose and He is alive.
