Martin Luther saw that what the Catholics were teaching about works righteousness, purgatory and indulgences was nowhere in the Bible and tried to reform and correct the catholic church. the catholic church did not change anything and declared martin Luther a heretic and he broke from the church and started his own religion
In the 1500's, the western Church saw a lot of corruption. An German, Augustinian monk named Martin Luther challenged the Church magisterium on certain new and growing practices on the basis that they were incompatible with Christianity. He, and others, called for a reform within the Church. Many other theologians, clergy, sholars, world leaders and lay people sympathized with these sentiments. However, the pope was offended and unwilling to hear such cries for reform. So, rather than a reform within a unified Church, a schism occured. Since that time, the Lutheran and Roman Catholic Churches have been separate ecclesiastical bodies under separate leadership. The name "Lutheran" was first coined by papist sympathizers as an insult. The name was later retained in memory of the persecution and degradation that the first "Lutherans" encountered. Lutheranism quickly spread throughout Northern Europe starting in Germany. Currently, there are Lutherans on every continent. It is the official State Church of most of the Scandinavian countires and there are large numbers of Lutherans in North America and Africa.

Yes, the Lutheran Church did originate from the teachings of the Protestant reformer, Martin Luther. The Lutheran Church has many synods, or branches, with each differing slightly in belief. It is important to note that the Lutheran Church today may differ from some of Martin Luther's ideals, as he was one of many reformers or renewers of the Church. Martin Luther had concerns with the immoral practices occurring in the Roman Catholic Church during his time. Today the Roman Catholic Church has abandoned many of those practices.
