Polo left with his father and uncle at 17 years old to set up a trade with China. It took the group 4 years to get there. China produced the spices, silk, perfumes that Europe would come to want. He didn't trade jewels or fabric because that is what they all ready had in China.
he wasn't exactly looking for a new world but he was looking for a trade route to India as Europe had developed trade with India before their contact with India was lost as the ottoman Turks conquered Constantinople. since they needed the spices,gems,condiments which they imported they started to search for a new route to India thus leading to the discovery to north america, Cuba,west indies, Malaysia etc
Marco Polo was an Italian merchant adventurer. Marco Polo (1) trekked across Asia and was one of the first Europeans to make a detailed account of the cities, cultures, and technology of the places he went within the Far East. He documented his journeys mostly while he was in jail for (2) leading a group of Venetians into battle against a rival city-state. Polo was a merchant who (3) sold and traded rare items such as silk, spices, and gems. He (4) acted as a tax collector in China and Southeast Asia. He (5) familiarized the concept of paper money to people in Europe upon his return, this caught on. (6) He possibly introduced glasses for eyesight issues to the West. (7) He provided a detailed account of the postal system used in Mongol, which was very advanced for its' time. (8) Marco escorted a Mongol princess to Persia by boat in 1292. (9) Polo influenced Christopher Columbus and his travels. (10) Marco Polo and his father sewed gems and money into their clothes on their journey home in order to keep from being robbed of their belongings. (11) He also opened up the possibility for trading between the Europeans and the Far East.
