Moses was kept hidden in the bull rushes , as the ruler of Egypt had given an order that all baby boys should be killed. And Moses mother hid him.
He had been told in a dream that the a Jewish boy born during this period of time would destroy him. He wanted to wipe out any possibility of this happening. This is why Moses was put into a basket and floated on the Nile.

The Egyptians had decreed to kill all the newborn Israelite boys. Moses' mother hid him for three months (Exodus ch.2) in the house, but later found herself unable to do so (ibid). She then placed him in a waterproofed basket in the river bullrushes (ibid), in the hope that God would provide some form of rescue for him, and that is what happened.
I believe at the time of the Pharaoh (I think I spelled that right), all newborns that were boys were killed. Eventually, they would grow up and even become kings. The Pharaoh didn't want that. He sometimes threw the newborn baby boys to the crocodiles.
