Odysseus and his escaped crew go first back to the rest of the ships. After sacrificing the large ram, and feasting on the meat, they set sail and arrive at Aeoli, home of Aeolus.

After Odysseus "visits" the cyclops, he and his men go to the Land of the Dead.

Odysseus blinds the cyclops with a sharpened spear. They escape by attaching themselves to the bottom of the sheep. The cyclops is feeling the ground but does not hurt the sheep because he loves them. So when the Cyclops feels the tops of the sheep, he lets them go, letting Odysseus and his men go in the process.

If I remember right, Odysseus insists that the men go in there so that the Cyclops would give them 'guest-gifts' .
They had been driven by storm to an island near the land of the cyclopes. The next morning Odysseus decided to see what land that was. Nobody knew about the cyclopes. To understand the Odyssey I recommend you read it.
Odysseus went in to the cave because of his overabundant curiosity, which usually gets the best of him on his adventures.
