Jefferson's father was a large landowner, and a surveyor. He was a 'planter'. Where the father worked was in the fields, in the woods, and in an office at a handmade desk with very expensive for the day, drafting tools. Jefferson whose father died when Jefferson was 14, inherited about 5000 acres of land. He had other brothers and sisters, by the way.
