Many of the concepts for Shakespeare's plays were original. However, some concepts come from earlier myths. The basic idea of Romeo and Juliet is very similar to the Greek story of Pyramus and Thisbe.

They were almost all based very closely on previous plays, poems, stories and books. However, although the plots were not original, Shakespeare's particular treatment of them and his unique dialogue were.
