Very harmful tornadoes have struck many places. A few historical examples include:

  • Daulatpur and Saturia in central Bangladesh, where a tornado in 1989 killed more than 1300, the deadliest tornado in history
  • Murphysboro, Illinois and other towns in Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana where a record breaking F5 tornado killed a total of 695 people in 1925, the deadliest tornado to strike the U.S. Over 2,000 were injured and several towns were almost completely destroyed.
  • St. Louis Missouri where a tornado in 1896 killed 255 people (the 3d highest in U.S history). The same city was hit by another extremely deadly tornado in 1927 that killed 79.

U.S. tornadoes in more recent history have been far less deadly (with a couple exceptions), but many are still infamous. For example

  • The suburbs of Oklahoma City were hit by a massive F5 tornado in 1999. Although effective warnings limited the death toll to 36, the tornado still caused about $1 billion in property damage. Doppler radar measured winds of 302, the fastest ever recorded on earth.
  • Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, Alabama were hit by a monster of an EF4 tornado in 2011. It killed 64 people which, had it not been for an even deadlier tornado that same day' would make it the deadliest U.S. tornado since 1955. In addition, over 1500 were injured. Damage is estimated at $1 billion.
  • Joplin, Missouri was struck by an EF5 tornado less than a month after the Tuscaloosa tornado. At least 159 people were killed and over 1100 injured. This makes it the 7th deadliest tornado in U.S. history and the deadliest since 1947. With property damage at $2.8 billion it is also the most destructive tornado in U.S. history.

How long does it take for a tornado to wipe out a whole town?

Usually a tornado can't destroy an entire town. When it does happen in will involve a very large, very strong tornado striking a very small town. In cases like this the town in question would probably be destroyed in about 5 minutes or less. Beyond that most towns would be too large to be completely covered by a tornado.
