The earliest Greek people were the Minoans. They lived on the island of Crete 3000 years ago and their civilization lasted for 2000 years. Greece is a peninsula that is easily accessible by boat. This feature made it an ideal place to settle and because the Minoans were trading with other countries, Greece was well known.

Due to this, permanent settlements were established and civilization spread outward from there. Note: Greek, Egyptian, and Middle Eastern civilization began in 5000 BC. Chinese civilization began in 4000 BC and Roman civilization did not begin until about 1000 BC. So the world's oldest civilizations are Greek, Egyptian and Sumer (which was in the Middle East).
