It was the single largest air battle of the war between the Japanese and the American air services. It also decimated the last of the veteran pilots of the Japanese air service. After that they didn't have any sizeable number of veteran pilots to train the new pilots. After the Mariana Turkey shoot the Kamakazi became prevalent as it required very little training.
