Buddhists believe you can achieve enlightenment by following the Eight Fold Path.
A Buddha is one who has worked out how to acheive enlightenment, and a Bodhisattva is one who is about to achieve enlightenment.

Enlightenment is a state of relative and absolute happiness, this state is the goal of many Buddhists.
At the end of a prayer, Japanese Buddhists often chant "Namu Amida Butsu," which means "I take refuge in Amida Buddha." This phrase expresses devotion and trust in Amida Buddha, who represents compassion and the promise of enlightenment. In some traditions, they may also conclude with a bow or a moment of silence to reflect and show gratitude.
One can achieve enlightenment when one accepts the plainness of one's life. Found not in doctrine's, but rather when one's energy is balanced and one's mind is clear. Hope this helps!!
Siddartha achieved enlightenment when meditating at the Bohdi tree. He also then realized the importance of darhma, created the eightfold path, and realized that the feeling of happiness never lasts forever.
