Although people around the planet have been wearing dreadlocks for thousands of years, it may be safe to say they originated in Africa. After all, African hair textures are the most dread-able. I've read some things stating that dreadlocks were required to be worn by African Holy Men, etc. However, I would imagine that neanderthals had some knotty locks long before they were required by such African religions.
