The Greeks built huge temples to worship their gods in. They would sacrifice animals or bring food to the temples to try to please the gods.

It usually was a praying spot for the greek gods for any people that still believed in them. People would go there before they either traveled or went to war to pray for safety or to win.
It is proven today that they did not. But the Athenians (Greek people) still practice religions in which they do, they pray to the Greek gods who are said to have 'magical powers' but in reality they do not.
Aphrodite (Roman, Venus) was the Greek goddess of love and beauty, so people would pray to her for anything concerning those.
