The math wasn't wrong on the Towers. What they didn't count on was a 747 jet full of fuel hitting the building. Essentially what happened was when the jet blew up the heat was so hot from the fire that fittings holding the steel frame together weakened. As soon as that happened they fell one on top of the other. Thus, the whole building collapsed in on itself.
