People were either wealthy planters who owned large sucsesful plantations or the were poor white farmers. but most of the population was made up by slaves.

George mason was a member of the A.A.L.S., American political leader, He was one of the most affluent of the colonial Virginia planters he became a member of the Ohio Company (serving as treasurer until 1773), and in 1759 he was elected to the Virginia house of burgesses.
Most were farmers/ planters, some made glass and some made pine pitch from the trees (used to waterproof ships) Some were fishermen and hunters, and a few were soldiers.

It is the wealthy men who always dominate political activity. They have the money, education, and time. It is to their advantage to be in the government. It hasn't changed any in 2,000 years. The 55 men who wrote the constitution were the wealthy, educated, and best read . Most them were lawyers , planters, and business owners. Even today Congress and the president are the wealthiest people in the country. This is no mistake.
Jamestown, Virginia was one of the most important colonial cities. The crop that made it most profitable was tobacco.

the reaction to the planters were that they were upset over the much labor intensive work. this was most popular in the south region of the country.
England granted land to eight proprietors in the South Carolina area in 1663. The first settlers came in 1670. They were mostly wealthy planters and their slaves emigrating from Barbados. They started growing sugar and cotton. They first kicked out the Native Americans, and then they refused to be ruled by the proprietors, seeking more direct representation. North Carolina was part of the same colony... it split off in 1729.
