There were four classes, in order of prestige: 1) warriors; 2) farmers; 3) craftsmen and 4) merchants. Some people such as doctors, priests and prostitutes were outside these classes.
It was almost a workable arrangement for feudal times, but it broke down with industrialization because it caused proud samurai warriors, the top class, to become the employees/servants of the lowest class merchants. The Emperor Meiji abolished the class system in the 19th Century, but families, particularly those of the warrior class, still cling to aspects of it.
