The name "Pluto" is the name of the Roman god of the underworld, who was equated with the Greek god "Hades". It is said that the name Pluto was chosen for the planet because it begins with the first letter of the given and family names of the discoverer of the planet, Percival Lowell.

Pluto is the roman god of darkness and the underworld. When discovered in 1930 the planet was named Pluto was inspired because it was then the most distant planet with little sunlight. Pluto has now been reclassified as a dwarf-class planet. There are presently four other dwarf planets, one larger with the name Eris.

In Roman mythology, Pluto means Hades, the god of the underworld. It was named like this because it stays in perpetual darkness. Or from Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse's dog, Pluto. Walt Disneys Pluto was made AFTER the discovery of the planet pluto, therefore the dog had nothing to fo with the naming of Pluto the planet!

It was officially named by the Lowell Observatory that discovered it, but the idea for the name came from Venetia Burney an 11 year-old school girl from Oxford. She suggested the name because Pluto is the name of the mythological god of the underworld; at the time (1930) of its discovery Pluto was one of the farthest known objects in the Solar System and receives only a tiny amount of sunlight.
