Pope Joan grew up in a time when girls were not taught. She had a German father that was very stern and strict. Her mother was Danish who was liberal for her time. She taught her daughter to read , but when Joan's father found out he beat her. Eventually Joan ran away and disguised herself as male. She became a priest and was educated as a priest. She lived most of her life as a male, but her downfall came when she took a lover and became pregnant. On a traditional celebration through Rome at Easter she went into labor and had the baby. Neither lived through the event. The Church eliminated all reference to Joan and today some historians are not sure she existed. There is a very good book called POPE JOAN that you can read.
