Recycling could be argued to have always been with us. No one person "invented" it or "started" it. Let's just turn back the pages of history and look at a few things. Some of the bombs dropped on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese were made with steel that was manufactured from U.S. scrap iron that was sent overseas. After the Civil War, timber from structures that were being dismantled or that had been damaged and were not rebuildable was taken and used in other structures. Recycling these kinds of building materials predates this by a long way, and continues today. The Great Pyramid, when it was completed, was finished with highly polished white limestone ('casing stones') that were hauled off and put to other use later on. And the reuse of stone building materials predates even this. Coming back forward in time we can look at, say, the aluminum recycling program that allows us to keep this amazing metal flowing as feedstock to the container industry as well as the construction industry, transportation industry and the chemical and coatings industries. The reuse of aluminum saves well over 90% of the energy it takes to mine the ores and process and refine them to win the metal. There have been new "wrinkles" added to the schemes applied to recycling over the years and the centuries. It's just that today we are doing more and more recycling because of the decreasing supply of new materials and the increasing costs of the energy it takes to make "new" stuff.

It is not possible to know who first thought of recycling.

Recycling was first thought of in 1776 during the War of Independence from England. Americans recycled scrap metals to help fight the war. But it wasn't until 1895 when the first residential waste program in the U.S. was started in New York. The chemistry behind recycling is the idea that "everything circulates". For instance, if you saved a box of cereal and put it into your recycling bin, that box of cereal can be made into a package of papers, or a newspaper, or a tissue box, and the possibilities are endless. Common household items that are recycled are newspapers and paper towels, aluminum, plastic, glass soft drink containers, steel cans, and plastic laundry detergent bottles.

The process of recycling can be broken down into three steps. The first step is "collection and processing". In this step one would look for items to recycle, they can be found on curbsides, drop-off centers, buy-back centers, and deposit/refund centers. These items are then sorted, cleaned, and prepared into marketable commodities for manufacturing at a materials recovery facility. In the second step, the "manufacturing" step, the recyclables are then manufactured into new items containing either total or partial recycled content. The "purchasing recycled products" step is the last. This step completes the "circle" of recycling, where consumers buy the recycled items.
