The country that Edmund Hillary and his team mates started there Mount Everest expedition in was Kathmandu in Nepal.
The British Mount Everest expedition that Edmund Hillary was a member of reached base camp on the 12th April 1953. They would have rested for a few days before starting on there climb of the mountain.

Following his ascent of Everest, Hillary devoted most of his life to helping the Sherpa people of Nepal through the Himalayan Trust, which he founded. Through his efforts, many schools and hospitals were built in Nepal.
Edmund Hillary was 16 years old when he became interested in climbing during a school trip to Mount Ruapehu.
It became popular as some sort of media angle to add interfest to the mountaineering conquests of Everest and other peaks. There are no valid sightings by men such as Sir Edmund Hillary- the first mountaineer to top out Everest- though he was interested in the subject which is only natural- an occupationa hazard if nothing else!
The first climbers to visit Mount Everest was a British Expedition in 1921. They returned to the mountain in 1922 and 1924.
Through 2007 the number of climbers summiting Everest reached at least 2,972, and the number of deaths on the mountain reached 208. You'll need to dig out the names for yourself. For a start, the first were Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay.
He was knighted not only for being the first person the climb mt Everest, but for his work in helping the local people in Nepal called sherpas. He helped start up the himalayn trust, to help the sherpas. The trust helped to provide homes, medical care, education, and much much more.
