Confederate General Robert E. Lee was the top commander in the Confederate Army. In early April of 1861 he found his army surrounded and surrendered to US General Grant at the Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1861. This effectively ended the Civil War.
In August of 1945, the British Allies accepted the surrender of Japanese troops in southern Vietnam. Lord Mountbatten, who was the Supreme Allied Commander of the Southeast Asia Command accepted the surrender, and later the French reasserted control of Saigon.
It was the end of the Civil War.
