He directed his main efforts against the British because he believed that the French held a stronger position and had more artillery than did the British. Ludendorff also decided to keep his reserves well back from the front lines. He wanted them to be secure and be able to use them anywhere along the front if needed. At their rear position, the reserves were safe from allied attack.
