Dowless was an attempt to blend in with the local population of Northern Ireland about 400 years ago. The original name was Dallas, which is an old Norse name, hence the ancestors of the family were Danes. The Danes sent thousands of colonists into Great Brittan.

The name appears to have oringinated in Aberdeanshire Scotland. Since Aberdeanshire boarders the north sea and the history of the area confirms that it was under heavy control of both the Anglo Saxons and the Danes (basicly the same people), then the strong suggestion would be that the name Dowless was of Anglo Saxon or Danish origin. DNA examination cannot distinguish between the two.

The De Lange family name likely originated in the Netherlands. "De" is a common prefix in Dutch surnames and "Lange" could refer to someone who is tall or lengthy in stature, suggesting it may have been a descriptive name given to an ancestor of the family.
