Digging began in Rome, New York in July of 1817. It was started there because the terrain was level and there was no need to build locks from Rome to Syracuse.
Building of the Erie Canal began on July 4, 1817.
The Erie Canal
You could call the Erie Canal a "wedding of waters." It joined the Hudson River which has its mouth on the Atlantic Ocean at New York City to Albany. Then it joined rivers, lakes and marshes by digging ditches westward to Lake Erie.
Construction of the Erie Canal began July 4, 1817 and was completed October 26, 1825
It started in 1817 and took 8 years.

The Erie Canal
Most of the bedrock removed during the digging of the Erie Canal was primarily limestone and shale. These materials were prevalent in the regions through which the canal was excavated, particularly in areas like the Niagara Escarpment. The removal of this bedrock was necessary to create a navigable waterway that connected the Hudson River to Lake Erie, facilitating trade and transportation. The excavation was a significant engineering challenge, requiring innovative techniques and considerable labor.
The Erie Canal was not cemented.
No the Erie Canal did not join the Ohio River. But New York was not the only state that built canals. The state of Ohio also built canals. The Miami and Erie Canal went to the Ohio River. The Erie and Ohio Canal also reached the Ohio River. Neither of these canals were as successful as the Erie Canal.
