Where did the idea Batman come form?

Bob Kane and Bill Finger had many inspirations for the character. They wanted a character who was a crime-fighting detective like the Green Hornet, who was dark and masked like Zorro, who was a creature of the night like the Shadow. Bob Kane wanted him to be intimidating and scary toward criminals, so he gave him a dark, bat-influenced costume with a large cape. Originally, back in 1939, Batman would kill criminals and use guns. But after he got his own series in 1940, he got a sidekick, Robin, and became a lot more light-hearted. In this incarnation, he had a code of ethics which included never killing people.
