On our journey around the sun each year, in November we pass through the dust trail of the comet Tempel Tuttle. As we do, some of this dust and debris gets into our atmosphere and burns up, which we then see as meteors. On November 17th each year we are right inside the dust trail, so we see the most meteors, before we start moving out again. You will still be able to see meteors for many nights to come, as we will still be in the dust trail, but moving into a thinner part of it again and then out. The meteors appear to come from the part of the sky where the constellation Leo is, hence the name Leonids, but they have nothing to do with Leo.
