From my understanding from my grandmother, it was because soap companies sponsored the mini dramatic operas on the radio. Also, women were homemakers and doing chores such as laundry while they were listening to the radio.

Early soap operas were usually sponsored by soap companies (on up to present sponsors such as Procter & Gamble) as a good way to appeal to their housewife customers. Calling them "operas" is common with other types of entertainment--for example, Westerns are sometimes called "horse operas." As a term which was both colorful and apt for a new type of entertainment, the name stuck.

Because in the States in the 60's television drama was sponsored by soap powder manufacturers, ie ' this drama is brought to you by Proctor and Gamble , makers of super white washing powder. Ad breaks would be introduced with the words, ' a word from our sponsor'...........washing powder manufacturers much have been the major sponsors for the term to develop.
