They plundered anywhere they thought had something to take. The English and Irish Coastlines were a favorite at first and they usually hit the churches, monasteries, and small villages. They took religious objects, slaves, and anything of value. There was one group in the raids called berserkers. Historians have discovered that these men drank or ate a drug that made them high and they went berserk. I read one account by an archeologist about a discovery in an Irish cave. He found bodies of women and children who had hidden in the cave, but among the things in the cave were coins with wax on them. He surmised that a Viking raid had taken place and the Vikings had put the coins with wax in their beards. The coins fell out because of the men getting over heated while killing the villagers. This is how history is learned.
