It stems from the time of the American Revolution. You have heard of the Red Coats and the Blue Coats I suppose. That represented the British in their red uniforms of the United Kingdom forces for King George. Then there were Federalists who had declared their independence from the British rule. They wore blue uniforms primarily. So the idea of Red Vs. Blue came along.
